It’s All in the Hardware: Eyelets, Rivets and So On

In spring-summer 2023 fashion is taking a look back at the beginning of 2010-s with its stud obsession. Do you remember the iconic Valentino Rockstud line? It looks like the excessive hardware is coming back, but in a slightly more subtle form. Over the past several years we can see a great increase in customers’ interest in premium natural fibres, like cashmere, mohair and merino wool. All of these are winter fibres, and we can expect consumers to pay more and more attention to the composition labels.
With the rise of heating prices, people trying to slow down on fashion consumption and consumers becoming more conscious of the composition, sales of natural fibre knitwear and jersy are expected to go up.

After years if “informal” dress code and years of pandemic that locked us down in the isolation of apartments and bound us to comfy sneakers, we have the desire to buy and wear the shoes that made us feel chic and trendy and properly dressed to go out or simply go back to the office.

The chelsea boot design dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom: she wore the chelsea boots in her spare time, finding them extremely comfortable. This shoe was an invention of her personal shoemaker J. Sparks- Hall. The ingenious idea was based on the use of Charles Goodyear’s vulcanised rubber to create a very strong elastic fabric, intended to wrap the shoe while still allowing a comfortable fit. This type of shoes were immediately used in the equestrian field and then soon spread throughout Europe.

The success was even greater in the sixties, in the environment of Swinging London, located between the districts of Chelsea and Fulham, where they took the name by which they are still known today.

The Beatles boot are the “little brothers” of chelsea, and took their name from the famous rock group “Fab four”, because they were invented and commissioned by them, at the time of their first concerts.

They were created by a shoe factory based in London, but founded by two Italians, “Anello & Davide”, specialized in footwear for the entertainment world.
John and Paul wanted chelsea boots that in addition made them raise a few centimeters: hence, the idea of creating a slightly high but comfortable heel (the Cuban heel was chosen, used in dance shoes) and to make more narrow.

The “Preppy” is back in Fall 2022/23

The preppy style return marks the end of the informal and the beginning of the comfy-formal style: the derby shoe in the classic winter colours in fine leather and ultra-light sole is a must-have in fall 22.

The derby shoe is very similar to the oxford shoe, the most formal of the shoes, but slightly less formal and more comfortable. Derby shoes have a more relaxed look giving the shoe added diversity both in terms of how they are worn – smart or casual – and how they are made, suede being as popular a choice as leather. Unlike an Oxford, Derby shoe has open lacing meaning that quarters are stitched on top of the vamp.

Sneakers are a part of contemporary fashion culture. From converse all star, which I used to wear back at school in the 90’s, to high end luxury brands like the Gucci collab with Adidas, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, every fashion brand is now offering sneakers in their collection.

This year we’ve seen a come back of the mid-top and high-top by Nike and Adidas and we talked about the best styles to buy in the 2022 in our previous post.

The high top sneakers were one of my favourite shoes when I was a boy in the 80′. But as we all know “Fashion is the eternal recurrence of the new” and here we go again, the high top sneakers at the top of the chart in 2022. The high top velcro sneakers are a classic from the 80′. This year, 2022, many luxury companies have included this style in their collection: Prada + Adidas, Maison Martin Margiela, Porsche Design and others. And we expect more to come.

I’ve got to say that when talking about sneakers, I still like a pair of good quality leather shoes. Some sneakers come in recycled or bio-organic sustainable material but when I buy a good pair of shoes then they last me for years so in a way that’s sustainable: buy less and keep it for longer.

After the white sneakers, the coloured low-top it’s perhaps second in order of importance to have in your wardrobe. The choices of brands here in my opinion vary from the affordable New Balance, to the luxury hogan and Tod’s sneakers, but there is also the option of the mid-priced vintage looking Diadora originals.

The other thing I pay attention to when I buy the sneakers is the type of sole. Personally I don’t like the high external border of the sole, like in the first two sneakers of this article because if your foot is not thin it ends up feeling a bit tight which makes the sneakers hard to wear for several ours. The converse all star are an example of these shoes that I cannot wear all day feeling comfortable. The other reason is that the high border plastic of the trainers lets the feet breath less than the low edge soles.

We carried out a comparison between sneakers

As the summer is coming up, we, both as customers and fashion professionals, are keeping an eye on this season’s swimwear trends. In general, we can see both 2000’s nostalgia as well as some very new materials gaining popularity. So let’s dive right in and take a closer look at this summer’s beach fashion. 

Don’t Lose Your Sparkle

We started noticing more and more glitter swimsuits a couple of summers ago, but it looks like in 2022 the trend is going to be at its all time high. The sparkly bikini tops and bottoms look great in photos, catch some attention, yet not too much, and are perfect for beach parties. 

Some of the sets we love include Lumiére lurex high-waisted bikini by Oséree that is going to beautifully compliment tan skin and Sisi one-shoulder embellished bikini by Dodo Bar Or, a great example of a glamorous swim set.  

The Seamless Transition to Comfort

We all know how much the pandemic has changed the way we dress. Months of lockdown and social distancing made us used to wearing our comfy sweatpants, fuzzy socks and fleece hoodies all day every day. It has deeply affected the underwear market, where comfort has since become the most important thing. Seamless underwear has become a big thing lately, and the trend has now transitioned to swimwear. We see more and more seamless sets and it’s totally understandable why. Less seams means less muffin tops and post-swim chafing.

The Swim/Wet Suit

Because of the pandemic induced skin care craze, more and more people are concerned by sun damage to their skin. Yet reapplying sunscreen while at the beach can be quite tedious, and there’s a solution that is being discovered by more individuals every summer season: wetsuits as swimsuits. 

Wetsuits used to be worn only by people doing water sports: surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, etc. But now things are changing and a wetsuit has become a fashion item that gives more sun protection to the wearer.

Terry to Try

It’s the second summer when the terry cloth has migrated from beach towels to beachwear, and this year we see more and more variations of the trend: ribbed and gathered effects, cutouts and prints. It all seems to somehow work together with the fuzzy texture.
